Learn to row

Ariel runs a Learn-to-Row course for those who have never rowed before, or with only a little experience. Two courses are run each year; in the spring and the autumn.

You can register your interest for the next available course.

The course runs for 12 sessions, twice a week for six weeks. Weekend sessions start at 12:30, Monday sessions start at 18:30.

We have worked with British Rowing to come up with a comprehensive course to cover everything you need to enjoy rowing.

During the course you will learn the basics of sculling and rowing, indoor rowing and water safety.

The cost of the course is £140, which includes silver membership of British Rowing.

If you are interested in joining the next course please contact the Ariel Learn-to-Row coordinator Lucy Wheeler at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Is there a minimum level of fitness required?

The course is suitable for all levels of fitness. Rowing is an ideal aerobic sport for the entire body as it is low impact and low injury.

The only requirement is that you must be able to swim at least 50 metres in light clothing for safety reasons.

Once the course is complete, you will have the chance to join a vibrant and friendly club and take part in water- and land-based sessions to improve your fitness and technique throughout the week as well as weekend rowing sessions.

If you want to race we will give you every opportunity to be competitive at events – you’ll be in good company.

Is there an age restriction?

At present the course is only open to those aged 18 and over.
